First revised and annotated draft of 'Research Proposal on Nutritional Control of Transitional Errors' - part 1

This file contains the first part of the revised and annotated draft of the 'Research Proposal on Nutritional Control of Transitional Errors.' It has the names of all three people who worked on it: PM Bhargava, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology of the Regional Research Laboratory, RP Singhal from the Department of Chemistry at the Wichita State University, and Annamaria Torriana-Gorini from the Department of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge. This draft is further divided into six parts for better preservation. This research proposal is stored in multiple files but is retained as originally found. This file also contains two handwritten notes with two different dates, which are retained in the initial section of the file.

Bhopal gas tragedy

This file contains correspondence regarding a meeting of the Board of Trustees of Sambhavna Trust. It also contains an email by Satinath Sarangi about the 25th anniversary of the Bhopal gas tragedy and a press conference; enclosed with it is a letter from the director of the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute and a schedule of events for the 25th anniversary of the disaster. It also contains an email by Vinod Raina commemorating the 25th anniversary of the disaster. Additionally, this file contains a handwritten note and an email to VM Katoch by C Sathyamala regarding issues related to the Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC), Bhopal. Correspondence regarding hazardous waste

This file contains correspondence with the group of ministers (GoM) on Bhopal about hazardous waste and toxic contamination, including a memorandum to GoM on the correction of figures in the curative petition and environmental rehabilitation and compensation for toxic contamination, a letter to GoM for a just and scientific resolution of the problem of hazardous waste and toxic contamination in Bhopal, and a roadmap to remediation and justice enclosed with it. It also contains correspondence with Satinath Sarangi about a copy of a letter to the prime minister. Enclosures are retained as found.

Articles and writings about Tata's proposal for involvement in Bhopal - file 1

This file contains articles on medical research in Bhopal sent through email by Satinath Sarangi. It also contains an email by Satinath Sarangi addressed to Chandana Chakrabarti, with which a letter to the prime minister is enclosed. The enclosed letter was from the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmachari Sangh, the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Purush Sangharsh Morcha, the Bhopal Group for Information and Action and the Bhopal ki Aawaaz to the prime minister. The subject of the letter is 'Ratan Tata's proposal regarding clean-up of soil and ground water contamination in and around the abandoned Union Carbide factory in Bhopal and the liability of Union Carbide and its owner The Dow Chemical Company, USA for the same'. It also has an article titled 'Toxic Legacy' by V Venkatesan for Frontline, The Hindu.

Publications

This series contains the important publications that Pushpa Mittra Bhargava kept in his collection. The first subseries contains 123 issues of Vijnan Karmee, the official publication of the Association of Scientific Workers of India (ASWI). These issues span a period from May 1949 to October 1968. This contains a few letters related to the seminar on 'Scientific Temper and Spiritual Values' held at the Nehru Centre, Bombay, on January 22 and 23, 1983. This has an article by Rajeev Joshi, titled 'The (Ir) Relevance of Religion to Modern Man, along with a few newspaper clippings and a brochure on the seminar.

Haldane family

The papers in this series pertain to the estate of JBS Haldane and his wife, Helen Spurway Haldane. JBS Haldane died in 1964. Following Helen Haldane’s death in 1978, PM Bhargava and his wife, Manorama Bhargava, handled her estate and corresponded extensively with JBS Haldane's sister, Naomi Mitchison, and her grandson, Graeme J Mitchison. Included here are letters, notebooks, handwritten notes, share certificates, financial documents, JBS Haldane’s Last Will and Testament, Helen Haldane’s autopsy, and articles on the Haldanes by PM Bhargava and other researchers. Certain letters also pertain to the dispatch of JBS Haldane’s personal papers to his family in the United Kingdom. These are a combination of originals and facsimiles. This series includes one photographic print and a newspaper article announcing Helen Haldane's death. Note on subseries: The files within the Correspondence subseries have been organized based on the original order of subject-wise arrangement. Letters within each broad subject have been arranged alphabetically and then chronologically, except in special cases. Certain key documents, such as official records, were removed and kept in the Official Records subseries. The share certificates under the Official Records subseries are oversized and have not yet been boxed. The third subseries contains personal papers, possibly compiled by JBS Haldane himself. It includes a notebook, handwritten drafts of his last will and testament, and notes on his surgical history, along with correspondence. These drafts were written by JBS Haldane in November 1962, when he was preparing for an operation in London.

Husain family

This series contains correspondence between PM Bhargava and members of the Husain family, including MF Husain and Mustafa Husain, publications such as an exhibition catalogue, articles, and exhibition materials pertaining to an exhibition featuring MF Husain’s paintings on key events in the twentieth century, with text by PM Bhargava. The letters discuss a proposed Husain-Bhargava Centre for Art and Science, Husain’s exile and death, and other subjects. The series includes several prints of MF Husain’s artwork and a facsimile of a letter from the artist to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The documents have either been arranged as they were found or arranged chronologically.
